Sub-Genres[]

Genre Description
Atmospheric Drum & Bass Atmospheric Drum & Bass, is a subgenre of Drum & Bass that which become prominent in the mid-nineties, although tracks with its traits date back as far as 1991. It distinguishes itself from the other genres of Drum & Bass by speeding up the Breakbeat and reducing their emphasis in the production, and instead focusing much more on the melodic aspects of the track, using slow, warm basslines, clean production and Downtempo, atmospheric melodies inspired by Ambient and Ambient House productions. These elements make this strand of Drum & Bass into a relaxing, "Chillout" type of music, as opposed to the frenetic energy of the Jungle and Happy Hardcore popular at the time.
Dancefloor Drum & Bass Dancefloor Drum & Bass is a subgenre of Drum & Bass that often includes several EDM components that were absent from Early Drum & Bass, such as Brostep-inspired sound design or melodic, catchy synth leads.
Darkstep Darkstep is a subgenre of Drum & Bass that combines Dark Drum & Bass with Brisk Breakbeats and Ambient sounds (Similar to those found in Neurofunk). Chromatic scales are commonly used in the composition of Darkstep. Breakbeat samples that are clipped haphazardly and off-time are extensively used. In contrast to Neurofunk, which draws its soundtrack from science fiction, Darkstep is a descendant of Techstep. Darkstep makes use of recognisable basslines from the 1990s, such as the Reese Bass, Soundscapes, Erratic Distorted Drum Fills, and Excessively Distorted Drum Patterns.
Halftime Halftime (Otherwise known as Halftime Drum & Bass) is a subgenre of Drum & Bass that emerged during the early 2010s. The name "Halftime" refers to the genre's distinct sound that was originally referred to as Drum & Bass playing at half its normal pace, essentially by removing half of the percussion. Taking influence from a variety of musical styles, including other Drum & Bass genres and especially Neurofunk, as well as Dubstep, Wonky, Certain Styles related to the Blossoming UK Dubstep Scene of the time and even Trap and Hip Hop, Halftime became distinct by its usage of Wonky, off-kilter rhythms and unorthodox, quirky sound design.
Jump Up Jump Up is a subgenre of Drum & Bass that uses strong bass tracks with lots of LFO to give them a wobbling sound, bringing loud and frantic noises like shrieking synthesisers, face-melting growls, and many others.
Liquid Drum & Bass Liquid Drum & Bass is a subgenre of Drum & Bass that uses more Traditional Drum & Bass sound design, with vibrant melodic synths, busy percussion, and euphoric atmospheric elements while still keeping a more minimalist sound. It is a more atmospheric side to Traditional Dancefloor Drum & Bass and somewhat similar to Atmospheric Drum & Bass. Lighter, "Tinier" and shorter drumbeats frequently accompany the fan-favorite filtered reese bass. The percussive structure is prioritised in this subgenre in order to create mood.
Minimal Drum & Bass Minimal Drum & Bass is a subgenre of Drum & Bass that takes the sound as minimal as possible without losing all of its Drum & Bass characteristics, albeit the most extreme tracks are sometimes mistaken for Dubstep.
Neurofunk Neurofunk (Also known informally as Neuro) is a subgenre of Drum & Bass that which emerged between 1997 and 1998 in London, England as a progression of Techstep. It was further developed by juxtaposing elements of darker, heavier, and harder forms of Funk with multiple influences ranging from Techno, House and Jazz, distinguished by consecutive stabs over the bassline; razor-sharp backbeats; scarce or nonexistent traditional melodies; a hyper focus on sub sound design; the use of modulated, distorted and filtered synthesizers and audio capture from samplers such as the Akai S1000 and Emu E6400. Neurofunk is very closely related to Techstep, but the primary characteristic that distinguishes the two genres is Neurofunk has more emphasis on flowing complex rhythms using processed and enhanced.
Techstep Techstep is a subgenre of Drum & Bass that developed in the middle of the 1990s. A gloomy, sci-fi atmosphere, almost exclusive reliance on synthesised or sampled sound sources, 2-Step kicks and snares, inspirations from Industrial and Techno, and what some authors have called a "Clinical" sound are its distinguishing features.
